When an individual is looking for something online, they have a goal in mind. They know what they are looking for and frequently it can be frustrating to try and sort through the many pages of useless content to find what they really need. Giving a person what they are looking for is a way of building a virtual relationship with the reader. Content that is strategically placed and gives the reader what they are looking for is a way to ensure that they will return to your site in the future.

You have the content. You have what they are looking for. However, if your page does not rank on the search engines, the reader will not be able to find it. This is where keyword optimised content comes into play. The number of times that a specific keyword is mentioned on any given page is one of the most important factors in determining where that page ranks on popular search engines. Some articles can be optimised to as high as 15%. Which means that the keyword or phrase that you have chosen will be mentioned within that article 15% of the time. For instance: In a typical 500-word article, the keyword would be mentioned 75 times! Of course you do not want to sacrifice quality and readability as this will cause readers to click away even more quickly. Content that is optimised to 3-5% is usually the most effective.

Content articles that contain keywords in titles and throughout the first paragraph are very effective for increasing page rank. The search engine Spiders and Bots will scan the titles and headings of the content on your site to see what is relevant. Therefore, it is important to use the keywords in the title and also in the first paragraphs of the article. Keywords should also be included in the Meta tags on your page as well. There are some who would disagree with this but it is generally accepted that these factors help rank your site.
Keyword density and placement are important parts of optimising your articles for search engines. Search engine spiders scan a page in a way that makes it important to place your keywords where they will be detected and recognised as a keyword, so that your article will come up when someone searches for that keyword.

What is a Keyword?

A keyword is a word that is placed in your article several times, not just once. When a search engine spider discovers that you have a word placed several times in an article, it will determine that your page might be useful to other users that search for such a keyword.

Over Optimising Your Articles

It is important to note that there is also such a thing as over optimising your articles for particular words, this is known as “keyword stuffing”. When you stuff keywords in an article a spider will notice that you are attempting to trick it into placing your article high in the search engine results for that word, and will instead penalise your site and your page for doing such. This might even affect the rankings of your other pages or get your site blacklisted from a particular search engine if you are found to be keyword stuffing too many times.

What is Keyword Density?

Keyword density is how many times your keyword is placed in your article. Most use a percentage to determine how many times they will put a keyword in an article. For example, if you have a 500 word article and would like to achieve a keyword density of 5%, then you will want to have the keyword in your article exactly 25 times. You can find hundreds of resources and guides advocating one keyword density over another and the reasons behind the logic, however, ultimately you will have to determine which density is more profitable for your articles. Every webmaster has their own keyword density strategy that they like to attain based upon past results. As long as you do not over optimise and you are likely to make sufficient profit from your rankings, then you will be able to select whatever keyword density you like.

The Right Density

No matter what density you select, it is important to place keywords so that there are more at the beginning and end to produce an hour glass effect. Having the right keyword density in your article makes it more likely that you will earn income off of that article because it will rise in the search engine results and be seen by more people.
